Responding to Equity Theory focuses on the idea that employees are motivated by fairness in the workplace. According to Equity Theory, employees compare the ratio of their inputs (e.g., time, effort, skills) to their outcomes (e.g., pay, recognition, and benefits) with the ratios of others in similar positions. When employees perceive an imbalance or inequity (e.g., they believe they are putting in more effort than others but receiving less reward), it can lead to dissatisfaction, decreased motivation, and eventually turnover. In healthcare organizations, inequities can arise when employees feel that their workload, compensation, or recognition does not match the effort they put into their work (Sonu et al., 2024). For example, if healthcare workers perceive that colleagues with similar responsibilities receive more recognition or higher pay, it can lead to resentment and a desire to leave the organization. On the other hand, organizations that foster a sense of fairness and equity are more likely to retain employees.
