INITIAL CLINICAL SCENARIO:
School has started back in the fall for students in grades K-5 in a local community. Due to the recent pandemic of COVID-19, the school board has asked the community health nurse to develop a plan for students, staff, and teachers to better understand and prevent the transmission of communicable diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza. Current practice is masks are optional, not required, and sanitizing stations are set up around the school, gym, and cafeterias. Annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are not required. Students, staff, or faculty who have a febrile illness are requested to stay home until at least 24 hours after no fever without antipyretic medications. If testing positive for COVID-19, following the current CDC guidelines is recommended. Many new students are coming into the school district this year, and when questioned, are not sure of policies to follow when the child is sick. Upon assessment of the school, the community nurse observes many sanitation stations are not refilled or are not in populated areas. There are no reminder signs in bathrooms or hallways for hand hygiene or covering your cough/sneeze with your elbow. Maintenance reports they are supposed to provide deep surface cleaning, but do not know what this entails. Maintenance also states they do not have proper equipment beyond standard cleaning supplies and equipment.
