Equiano portrays his narrative as an autobiographical account of his early life in Africa, but in his biographical note the Norton editors observe that "[r]ecent scholarship has questioned these claims, suggesting that Equiano may have been born in the Carolinas." (It's just Equiano's claims about his childhood in Africa and first trip across the Atlantic whose veracity is now uncertain; the latter half of the narrative which covers Equiano's later life has been established as more or less autobiographical with reference to real events).
