Airline Maintenance - Coursework A
You must choose one topic from the two options on the following pages.
You should aim to write 2,500 words (not including a contents page, bibliography or referencing). The minimum word count is 2,250 and the maximum is 2,750.
The coursework should be in the style of a formal report, such as a consultant writing to the senior management team, and you must structure your work in a logical fashion by using appropriate headings. Also, you must include a list of references to identify your information sources and, if appropriate, a bibliography.
Topic
Cargo Conversion
The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a drastic fall in passenger traffic and airlines are looking to convert passenger aircraft into freighters to generate much needed revenue. Imagine you are a consultant to an MRO of your choice, leading a project to add freighter conversion modifications to its capability. The MRO will provide modification services to its airline customers planning the conversions.
Your task is to devise a proposal, for the MRO to gain competency for two different options. Namely full freighter conversion and/or a temporary conversion with partial use of the "main deck" for cargo, with eventual return to passenger configuration.
For the each of the options, your brief is to address the following issues:
• Critically analyse in-depth the investment required and ROI scenario.
• Provide insight into the expected market catchment area.
• Highlight niche market areas which could be exploited, including the risks and potential benefits.
• Shed light on whether the options might complement one another.
• Present a high-level GANTT chart with the most significant milestones of the implementation plan.
Fleet management in a pandemic
Imagine you are a consultant to an airline of your choice that has a significant number of aircraft in service as well as still to be delivered.
The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc throughout the airline industry. Passenger traffic has effectively ground to a halt and is recovering at a slow pace.
Your task is to formulate a plan for managing the fleet. The options being considered should include but not necessarily restricted to; short/long term storage, early return of leased aircraft, sale of older aircraft, deferrals/cancellations of new deliveries. The airline will want the flexibility to return some aircraft into service as soon as practically possible.
Your brief is as follows:
• Determine which aircraft types are to be stored and for how long.
• Review the opportunities and challenges for configuration modifications, Covid-19 related and/or otherwise, to stored aircraft before reactivation
• Analyse each option with particular reference to implications on maintenance.
• Based on your findings and research, come up with a suggestion as to which option(s) the airline should pursue.
• Make sure you critically argue your case and thoroughly research the background.
