The (dreaded) sun-devil phenotype results from an epistatic interaction between a sex-linked (alleles S/s) and an autosomal gene (alleles D/d), where the dominant allele must be present at BOTH loci, otherwise the an individual shows the hoped-for wildcat phenotype.
