Reasons for Acting Ethically
Think of the last time you were faced with a decision about how to behave correctly - briefly describe the situation. Following the Practical Gude to making an ethical decision , outlined below and explain the ethics you demonstrated based on a duty point of view or a consequentialist point of view or based on Virtue ethics . How did your decision turn out -what did you learn from the situation ? Consider constructing a counter argument to your point of view that would include reasons for not acting ethically?
Using the example in the test book -Pratical guide to making applied ethical decisions
1. Identify the ethical isue. What good was at stake in the situation Where there competing goods?
2. Know what is at stake Identify who had a stake in the situation and what thoses stakes are.
3. Envision options for acting. Use normative ethics to envision possible courses of action. If I act in X way , I will be producting the most good and lest harm? (Consequentialism) Will I be acting as the sort of person I want to be? (Virtue ) Did I act the way I'd expect others to act in such a situation? ( Duty)
4. Make a decision and test it if possible .
5. Act on your decision and reflect on the outcome? How did your decision turn out What have you learned from the situation.
