According to the case, LEED has been successful in promoting investment in sustainable building. However, it also attracted increasing competition (e.g., BREEAM). LEED (or USGBC) had to consider how to maintain its leadership in this field and how to grow further. Based on the time frame of the case (i.e., around 2017), provide your analysis for the following two questions.
1. How important is the update of LEED standard in terms of helping LEED to maintain competitive advantage, why? Explain what problems and difficulties would be in updating standard. Then how would you give advice to CEO Ramanujam regarding the update strategy (e.g., large- or small-scale update, fast or slow update etc.)?
2. The case lists several options for future growth (i.e., International markets, New project types, Existing Buildings, and New Technologies). Analyze these different options in terms of their benefit and cost, as well as potential difficulties and risks. In your analysis, make sure you link the analysis of these options to the competitive advantage of LEED and discuss whether the options will leverage, enhance, or renew the competitive advantage of LEED.
