Question

When a family member questions the use of enteral nutrition (EN) for a client with extensive burns, which information will the nurse provide? EN increases the hypermetabolic response to burns. If the gastrointestinal tract is not functional, EN is the best option. Provision of EN within 4 to 6 hours of injury decreases infection rates. It is required if calorie intake is under 75% of estimated needs for more than 1 day.
