1) In his farewell address, George Washington warned his predecessors over entangling alliances and divisive factions. Over the next two decades, however, the United States found itself deeply split into factions and entangled in foreign affairs, with major repercussions for both the development of the country domestically and for the continent as a whole. In this essay, discuss the rise and fall of party factions from the Washington administration through the election of Andrew Jackson. Be sure to consider how foreign affairs influenced the development of the original party system, and shaped laws and policy debates, both foreign and domestic. Likewise consider the efforts each administration made to avoid foreign entanglements (wars or European conflicts) as well as how various presidents from Republicans and Federalists, as well as Democrats, perceived their role in the party system. (It may help to think here about how Adams saw the Republicans or how Monroe or JQ Adam's envisioned the office as opposed to someone like Martin Van Buren or Andrew Jackson.) Was it possible for Washington's successors to maintain his vision for the country or were factions and entangling alliances part of life in the early American republic?
