Question

Why is it dangerous to use a diagnosis to explain why a behavior occurs or does not occur? Because diagnostic jargon is intimidating to most people. They will not feel like they can handle the individual's behavior. Attributing behavior solely to a diagnosis denies the importance of the environment in its display and can cause those around the individual to feel hopeless about intervening. Diagnoses do not explain the rate and topography of certain behaviors associated with self-injury and instrumental aggression. It is not dangerous to attribute behavior solely to a diagnosis. In fact, doing so provides enough information to design an intervention strategy.
