Question
According to Corbett, the Enlightenment was marked by a focus on science, reason, and intellectual study. Enlightenment thinkers pushed for using reason to understand both the natural world and human matters. They encouraged people to be skeptical of religious dogma and traditional authorities. This point of view leaned toward rational and secular thinking, which meant questioning accepted rules and pushing for a more realistic view of the world. According to Corbett, the Great Awakening, on the other hand, was a religious revival movement marked by intense spiritual and emotional passion. It stressed a direct and personal link with God, usually through intense religious experiences and passionate teaching. The Great Awakening pushed people to be more emotionally and spiritually involved. It pushed for a direct connection with God that could go beyond traditional religious structures. The different views came from the fact that the Great Awakening was focused on feeling and spirituality, while the Enlightenment was focused on reason and facts. Thinkers during the Enlightenment tended to reject supernatural theories in favor of logical analysis. On the other hand, the Great Awakening put a lot of weight on personal religious experiences and emotional ties to faith. But even with these differences, both groups had some things in common. As Corbett said, they questioned established leaders. Thinkers during the Enlightenment questioned religion and political leaders and pushed for more democratic and open government. Also, the Great Awakening shook up established religious groups by encouraging a closer, more personal connection with God, often outside of traditional church settings.
