You are the director of a mostly state-funded medical clinic that focuses predominantly on low- income population groups. By virtue of your clinic's strategic location, your patient population is highly diverse, and a significant subset of your patient population does not speak English.
At your clinic every patient is given the opportunity to fill out a patient satisfaction feedback form at the end of the clinical visit. At the annual meeting of the clinic board in 2012, concern was raised about the dissatisfaction scores from non-English-speaking patients, which were high in comparison with the scores obtained from English-speaking patients.
Your task now is to execute a plan that not only improves these scores in particular but also improves the overall cultural competency of the clinical stuff in general. To expand your data and research further, visit a clinic or health center and, if possible, interview some of the staff. Then answer the following questions.
Questions
1. While your clinic may wish to enhance culturally competent care, what other concerns or priorities might compete for your clinic's limited resources?
2. What are the benefits from culturally competent care, from your perspective as clinic director? Are there any potential downsides?
3. What short-term indicators could you use to monitor the efficient execution of your hypothetical plan? What long-term indicators could you use for evaluating the success of that plan?
