Q - English is spoken widely around the globe. Do you think that it is important to learn other languages?
A - English is spoken all over the world, even in nations at which English isn't the primary language. This is one reason that shows that communication between different cultures is crucial to the understanding and communication between nations. There are many different reasons to learn other languages. One big reason to learn another language is simply better understanding of cultures and better communication with a wider span of people. You will get more out of traveling and it will be more enjoyable at that. Also while traveling or just being at home you can enjoy foreign art such as films, theater, and even music. Also learning other languages gives you a better understanding of your own culture. By learning an outside language you also learn of the culture at which the language originates. By understanding another culture you get to see from a different perspective your own culture and learn how it differs from others. This will lead to a better appreciation for your own culture, as well as how it differs from others around the world. On the aspect of careers, being bilingual will absolutely make you more marketable. This is also very dependent on what type of work you do and the region your work is set in. I live in the South in Louisiana, I plan on doing social work of some type later in the future, and because there are many Spanish speaking people in this region, I will learn Spanish as my second language. The skills you have to acquire when learning another language also sharpens cognitive and life skills.
