Workshop Participation

Bring a copy of your topic, thesis statement, and a DETAILED outline or rough draft of your research paper. You must come to class prepared to participate in a peer editing activity to receive full marks for the workshop.

Paper

This paper is an individual assignment. Your final paper (including references list) is due on December 4th. Papers must be submitted as a typed, hard copy.

The essay will require you to compare & contrast woof the short stories studied in class. Comparison/contrast essays require you to look at how certain elements - ideas, themes, characters, etc. - are similar and/or different in two pieces of writing. This exercise will require you to have a firm understanding of both the stories themselves and the literary elements that you are examining. It is intended to broaden your understanding of how different pieces of literature can explore similar themes.

The paper should be approximately 1500 words in length and must follow MLA formatting and citation guidelines throughout. The paper must contain the following elements:
• An introduction including a thesis statement that takes a clear position on the chosen topic.
• Do not consult any secondary sources online. This paper must be written entirely in your own words.
• Close reading of the text.
• A Works Cited list (of the stories you are examining) and in-text citations. Assignments that do not include in-text citations will be subject to significant penalties.

Should you require assistance with narrowing down your topic, I am more than happy to provide guidance.

Topics:

o Consider the themes imprisonment and artistic expression in "The Yellow Wallpaper" and "Sonny's Blues." Both of these stories feature protagonists who are artists who are held captive. What do the stories have to say about the relationship between these two themes and the necessity of artistic expression?
o Examine the grotesque plot twists in "A Rose for Emily" and "Pickman's Model." What is the effect in terms of the overall plot - and what does it have to say about the psychic state of the central characters?
o Consider the theme of justice vs. vengeance in "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Finkelstein 5." Consider the moments of intense violence in both these stories. How do both of these stories explore the gulf between these two ideas?
o Consider the satire in "Harrison Bergeron" and "Friday Black." What do both these stories have to say about life in the western world? (Satire = humor with a lesson or social critique.) Are they satirizing similar things? Different?
o Compare and contrast the antagonists in "Bloodchild" and "Escape from Spiderhead." Both of these characters (T'Gatoi and Abnesti) play the dual role of captor and friend. What do both these characters have to say about the nature of control and manipulation?
o Analyze the nonlinear plot structures of "A Rose for Emily" and "Story of Your Life." How do both stories break from typical narrative conventions and benefit from presenting events in the order that they do?
o Consider the theme of communication in "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "Story of Your Life." Both of these stories illustrate both the challenge and necessity of effective communication. What do they have to say about the nature of communication, especially the failure to communicate?
o Examine the themes of race and racism in either "Sonny's Blues" or "Everyday Use" and compare them with the lyrics of Kendrick Lamar. Consider that about half-a-century separates these cultural products. What do they have to say about being black in America? How do they approach these themes similarly? Differently?
