There are numerous stories of successful reentry that have resulted from engaging offenders in meaningful work or training programs. The majority of individuals who enter prison lack education, work histories, and skills that can give them confidence, hope, and acknowledgement of their value. One of those examples is discussed in the Week 6 Assignment, and involves the opportunity for inmates to take college level classes in correctional facilities in New York State. One of the most significant, and perhaps unintended outcomes for those who participated in that program, was a sharp drop in recidivism failure of nearly 38%. Absent looking at other possible reasons for this success, it does give credence to the theory that a sense of well-being goes a long way in determining who is and who is not going to be successful once back in the community. Another program that was recently highlighted in the New York Times is a baking program in the Italian Correctional System where inmates can not only learn to be skilled bakers, but also can earn a significant wage. Baking products produced by this program are made available for sale to the public, with revenues earned returned to support the program.
