Growing inter-imperialist rivalry led to the bloodiest war Europe had ever seen between the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) and the Allies (Britain, France, and Russia) from 1914-1918. Industrialization of military power created a new level of slaughter involving machine guns, artillery, tanks, and even poison gas. The U.S. declared neutrality at the outset of the war, but having emerged as the biggest economic power in the 20th century, huge loans were made to the Allies and trade grew dramatically led by weapons and other war materiel. This, along with German attacks on U.S. shipping, eventually drew America into the war. Direct U.S. involvement in WWI was limited and some of the biggest impacts of the war and its aftermath were felt at home. War industries boomed, dissent was suppressed under the Sedition Act, and labor unrest and racial oppression and violence erupted after the war.
