Task 1 - Problem clarification and critical evaluation
A) In your group, read the Awards and Project Challenges document carefully. Choose one challenge to focus your group project on. Write a detailed paragraph explaining why the challenge has been chosen. If possible, try to link the challenge to the engineering discipline that you are studying.
B) Write 1-2 pages of research to support why your chosen challenge is an issue that requires a solution. Write this in your own words, and reference the original sources using the Harvard style of referencing.
C) Carry out a detailed SWOT Analysis for your chosen challenge. List the:
- Strengths (list things anything related to the challenge that can be developed or expanded on)
- Weaknesses (list anything that your research shows to be inadequate and requires addressing)
- Opportunities (list areas that have the potential for improvement that relate to the chosen challenge)
- Threats (list anything that may threaten the future development of any ideas, such as technologies, costs, upfront investment, social and community acceptance, people's reluctance to change etc.)
Task 2 - Follow a design method to generate ideas
A) Describe the design method that the group carried out to generate lots of ideas. For example: Brainstorming, Scamper or Mind-mapping.
Briefly discuss why the method is beneficial to engineers when they are solving problems.
B) Provide detailed evidence o the design method that the group have used to think of ideas. Groups should aim for 20+ ideas (based on the same problem).
C) Shortlist the 6-8 ideas best ideas. Explain clearly why these ideas were shortlisted, and why others were rejected.
