Go to the reading passage ‘Shame', by Dick Gregory, in your textbook College Writing Skills with Readings, read it then answer the following questions

Task 1
In paragraphs 1 and 2, Gregory mentions several steps he took to impress Helene Tucker. Why does he include them in his essay? Was he successful in that? (25-50 words)

Task 2  (25-50 words)
A metaphor is a suggested comparison. What metaphor does Gregory use in paragraph 5, and what is its purpose? What metaphor does he use in the second sentence of paragraph 7, and what does it mean?

Task 3  (25-50 words)
In narrating the incidents in the classroom and in the restaurant, Gregory chooses to provide actual dialogue rather than merely to tell what happened. Why?

Task 4  (25-50 words)
At the end of the essay, Gregory shifts his focus from the classroom to the scene involving the wino at the restaurant. What is the connection between this closing scene and the rest of the essay?

Task 1 (150 words)
At some time in your life, you probably had an experience like Dick Gregory's in "Shame"-something that happened in a classroom, a group of friends or peers, or a family situation that proved to be both embarrassing and educational. At the time, the experience hurt you very much, but you learned from it. Write a narrative paragraph in which you retell this experience. Try to include vivid details and plenty of conversation so that the incident will come to life.

Task 2 (450 words)
Dick Gregory tells us in "Shame" that he was ashamed of his poverty and of being on welfare-to the point that he threw away the warm hooded mackinaw he had been given simply because it was obvious proof that he and his family were on relief. Do you think Gregory was justified in feeling so ashamed of his situation? How about other people who are on welfare? Are they justified if they feel ashamed? Choose either of the following thesis statements and develop it in an essay of several paragraphs:
i. People on welfare are justified in feeling ashamed.
ii. People on welfare should not feel ashamed.
Then develop your thesis by thinking of several reasons to support the statement you have chosen. You might think along the following lines:
• availability of jobs
• education or lack of education
• number of young children at home requiring care
• illness, physical disability
• psychological factors-depression, work habits, expectations, mental illness
• society's attitude toward people on welfare

Task 3 (450 words)
Write an essay about three basic things that people must have to feel self-respect.
In your thesis statement, name these three necessities and state that a person must possess them to feel self-respect. Here are some ideas to consider:
a) a certain number of material possessions
b) a job
c) a loving family or a special person
d) a clear conscience
e) a feeling of belonging
f) freedom from addictions
In your supporting paragraphs, discuss the factors you have chosen, showing specifically why each is so important. To avoid falling into the trap of writing generalities, you may want to give examples of people who lack these necessities and show how such people lose self-respect. Your examples may be drawn from personal experience, or they may be hypothetical.
