I would measure enthusiasm in the person tone and energy when they speak. It’s a energy level to me that a person gives off. Excitement is a reflection of enthusiasm, when a person is excited to help you out at a store you can feel the energy and excitement through the energy they are transferring to you. It’s one of those characteristic that can’t be taught and it at times it can be coach or instruction can be given to project or display a level of excitement to make the customers feel important. For instnace greeters during the holidays season always show a level of excitement at stores such as Walmart and other big name retail stores. They are genuinely friendly and courteous people that enjoy putting a smile on others face. Body posture is another thing that I look for in a person to see their level of enthusiasm.
I do think it is possible to teach enthusiasm if the person shows positive interest in sales only because its a relationship driven business. You can train a person on how to have the soft skills needed to communicate and give a warm welcoming spirit to others. Being that the person is already showing interest in sales that is enough to bring out the other qualities in completeing what is require or considered to be a great sales person. Knowledge of the job give a sale person confidence and that will energize them when taking on new customers. Enthusiasm can be taught in my opinion because its a level and standard that is required and if you don’t perform up to that, then you can be fired or laid off.
