Total performance, or, pay for performance is becoming normal practice within healthcare organizations. That is, the higher that an employee achieves on his goals as measured by a set of set criteria, the more compensation the employee will receive. This could be in the form of an annual pay for performance base salary increase or could be directly related to a bonus. Or, if you have a low performing employee, it may mean that they would receive no annual increase or not be eligible for a bonus. Again, the better you do, the more you make.

As a middle manager of your Internal Medicine Department, how does performance management relate to continuous quality improvement? Would enacting pay for performance improve overall quality in your area? What are the benefits? What about pay for performance could hinder quality performance?
