As your might expect, the regulations on employer's monitoring of employee emails: often favor the employer (its their email), are changing (e.g.: the EU), and vary by country. Having HR policy's on this can be a nightmare. On the one hand the technology for mining employee email is powerful; on the other hand there are regulations and the point of wanting to ensure employees are unhampered in their employee-to-employee/vendor business communications. You are in the U.S. in Global HR. The firm you've just joined has no policy on email monitoring. A GM you are supporting in India has had IT data-mining the India employee's business emails. He shares the summary w/ you with information on working hours, non-business use, etc. What is your BRIEF response and action item?
