Employees External Training Programs

Developing employees encompasses a broad range of activities and programs. This unit explores some of the more commonly used models and programs. Training and development plans begin with what KSAs are needed by individual employees. For example, Employee A may need specific technical skills, Employee B may need to improve communication skills, and Employee C may need to develop leadership skills.

There are a number of ways to develop employees, depending on the employee's needs and the resources and time available. This can include both internal and external programs. Internal programs can include classes, job rotation, special projects, on-the-job training, and so forth. External programs could include university and technical school education or a professional seminar.

What to do

An employee was introduced to a number of in-house models used for developing employees, such as  On-the-Job-Training (OJT), Job Rotation, special projects etc. Select any three and using appropriate professional articles to address the following:

  • Analyze the pros and cons of each model.
  • Describe under what conditions (nature of job, employee, skill level, et cetera) each of these models would be most effective. Also, two excellent sources of external training programs are university and technical college courses and professional seminars.
  • Can you identify an organization apart from Association for talent development as well as Society for human resources management and the American society for quality and describe the types of training courses they offer and how they could be used to develop employees in an organizational environment.
