Your facility employs 1,500 of the total 10,000 workers in your private sector corporation. After you, the HR Manager, conditionally offered the Accounting Department Manager position to Susan contingent upon the results of a medical examination, she disclosed that she has a degenerative eye condition that is currently being treated but is not curable. A medical examination is required for any managerial position. The examination reveals that although her current vision is unaffected, she will likely be totally blind within five to seven years. There is no question that she can currently perform the job she was offered. Discuss the following from an HR, a legal, and an ethical standpoint: (1) Must you hire Susan now—Make sure that you walk through your thought process in terms of what questions you would want answered NOW, (2) Should you hire her now, and (3) Assuming you hire Susan, what precautions would you take to protect your employer and your employee in light of the likelihood that her eyesight will fade.
