Effective leaders can empower their employees in a majority of ways. Five approaches to employee empowerment according to Newstrom are job mastery, control or accountability, provide role models, social reinforcement, and emotional support (Newstrom, 2015). For the purpose of my discussion, I will focus on job mastery and control empowering employees. In my opinion, nothing makes an employee feel more empowered and confident than knowing your job and being able to do it well. Management should help employees achieve job mastery by properly training and guiding them through obstacles (Newstrom, 2015). With proper training and troubleshooting skills, an employee has more control over factors that may affect their job performance. If a manager is successful in preparing workers for their job, this will reflect in employee performance. Not only is job mastery a direct reflection on management, but it's a great way to provide autonomy to each employee which. A study done by The Journal of Quality Management showed a correlation between employees who are satisfied with their job from being empowered, and an increase in customer satisfaction (Ugboro & Obeng, 2000). Quality employee performance and satisfaction is vital for a company to be successful. At the hospital (current place of employment) I received approximately 2 months of thorough on the job training. The best way to practice medicine is to learn from each patient/case and apply it to the next similar case. My direct supervisors spent plenty of one-on-one time preparing me, using their own experience and drawing from guidelines and protocols. I’m a more confident and well rounded therapist because management took the time to set me up for success. I feel more empowered on the job to make life saving decisions because of their training and patients are thankful for my quick thinking and preparedness. I can say that at my job I am satisfied and enjoy showing up to work because I’m empowered to make my own choices with my own patients.

In responding to the above post, respectfully agree or disagree with their ideas. In the examples they have provided, how was employee empowerment used to the organization’s benefit? Or how was the lack of employee empowerment detrimental to the organization as a whole? Encourage further elaboration by asking questions, offering alternative viewpoints, and/or including additional research that you have obtained.
