Employers assist employees by allowing them to learn new techniques or develop their knowledge in the industry in which they work. Organizations must have employee development because not only does it support the growth of the company, but it increases the talent set of each employee too. Most companies create a career development plan that incorporates the skills and competence that an individual needs to move to the next step in their career path. It is beneficial to the employer and its employees when the company invests in skills to help their employees and businesses grow.
Some approaches to implementing career development include experience, exposure, and education. The experience could be on-the-job experiences that help with employee growth. Exposure simply means learning through observing the work of others in the same/similar field. Education includes in-person courses, webinars, or e-learning. When a company incorporates all three styles into its career development plans, this results in a more successful outcome.
When a company participates in employee development, there are a few benefits that come with it. Employees want to know that they will have the chance to excel and have continued growth at their place of work, therefore attracting top talent is one of the benefits that comes with implementing employee development since the company can highlight this perk during the initial interviewing phase. Employee development also helps to retain talent, due to employees knowing they have the potential to learn the skills they need to be promoted. When employees are challenged to learn and develop their skills then they are more engaged as a result. Employee development keeps employees up to date on recent business trends and current practices, thus creating the opportunity for a company to have increased efficiency and improved innovation."
