As counselors who are Christian, we might be called on to help others during times of spiritual crisis. Spiritual crises can include times of deep grief or significant loss, times of spiritual doubts or questions, and loss of faith. Spiritual crises require a special kind of empathy and an understanding of the most effective ways to communicate empathy in the midst of a spiritual crisis. 

• Imagine that you have a client who is experiencing a spiritual crisis. The crisis might be a loss of faith, disappointment with God, unanswered prayer, a life that is not congruent with beliefs, grief, or any other spiritual crisis that you think of.
• What kind of responses might be empathetic within this particular situation?
• What kinds of responses might be considered judgmental?
