There is emotionally charged controversy concerning the building of a Muslim community center / mosque near Manhattan’s ground zero. Some politicans and 9/11 families have suggested the mosque’s location be moved further away from the area where the World Trade Center collapsed and killed nearly 3,000 people. Opponents of the center say its location is insensitive and fear it will harbor religious extremism. Those who back it cite the right to religious freedom and a need to promote tolerance and understanding.
