Impact of Different Personal and Family Factors on Employees’ Emotional Competence
This study explored the role of family environment (nuclear versus joint/extended) on emotional competence of employees at management colleges. Based on SRS, 20 different management colleges were selected from multiple cities. 200 people were selected (100 males, 100 females) ranging in age from 25-40. Respondents were split evenly between faculty and staff members. Four hypotheses were tested with results as follows:
Hypothesis 1: There will not be a significant difference between emotional competence of employees based on type of family (nuclear or joint)
Results: The value of t (t=5.275; P<0.05) implies a significant difference between the emotional competence of employees from the different family environments. Employees from joint families have higher emotional competence. Therefore the null hypothesis is rejected.
Hypothesis 2: There will not be a significant difference between the emotional competence of employees based on positions of employees.
Results: The value of t (0.082; P<0.05) indicates there is no significant difference in emotional competence of employees based on their positions. The null hypothesis is accepted.
Hypothesis 3: There will not be a significant difference between emotional competence of employees based on age and gender.
Results: Employees were split into three age groups within each gender (25-30, 31-35, 36-40) and mean scores were identified. F-ratio was applied to find the difference, which was significant (F=15.824, P<0.01), concluding that employees at different age groups differ significantly in their emotional competence. Females have more emotional competence at a younger age, and males more at a later age. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected.
Hypothesis 4 – There is no significant relationship between family environment and emotional competence.
Correlation of different dimensions (cohesiveness, expressiveness, independence, conflict, organization, family environment) was used to determine if there was any relationship between family environment and emotion competence. The coefficient of correlation of 0.62 was significant at P<0.05. Therefore, the hypothesis is rejected.
