Your lesson this week mentions the notion of eminent domain. Eminent domain is a principle that states the government (federal, state, county, or local) can take your property (land, home, etc) for the purpose of bettering the common good (building a highway, bridge, etc). The government must give you fair compensation for your property. However, recent developments have shown that in many small communities, the government has taken property from people for the sole purpose of raising tax revenue. This is done by allowing developers to come in, build, and the end result is a larger tax base (more buildings equals more property tax revenue) to generate more funds. Is this really for the common good? Shouldn't the government find a better way to generate tax revenue? Remember, they're not building a highway or bridge here. They're just replacing small properties with a larger one to generate more property tax income.
