Part 1.

A 55-year-old female patient presents to the emergency room complaining of severe pain and swelling in her left leg. She reports that the pain started suddenly and has gotten progressively worse over the past 24 hours. She has also developed a fever and her leg is now warm to the touch. She has a history of obesity and hypertension. A physical exam reveals that her left leg is significantly swollen and tender. She has a positive Homan's sign. A Duplex ultrasound is ordered and reveals a DVT in her left leg. The patient is started on anticoagulation therapy and is admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

Part 2

Patients who are at high risk of developing DVT include those who are obese, have hypertension, or have a history of blood clots. Treatment for patients with proximal DVT typically includes anticoagulation therapy. This therapy helps to prevent the clot from getting larger and also prevents new clots from forming. Patients may also be given pain medication to help with the pain and swelling associated with DVT. In some cases, patients may need to be hospitalized for treatment.
