Question

A previously healthy 21-year-old mother of two young children presents to the emergency department with fever, nausea, and vomiting. She denies any diarrhea, abdominal or pelvic pain. She does note a vague thoracic back pain that she had attributed to lifting her 22-month-old daughter. The physician performs an abdominal examination and assesses her kidneys for possible pyelonephritis. Which of the following statements regarding examination of the kidneys is true? Although the kidneys are retroperitoneal, they are usually palpable. When palpating the kidneys, the opposite hand can be used to lift up from the back and displace the kidney anteriorly. A palpable kidney is highly specific for malignancy. The kidneys can be percussed at the costal angle.
