Assignment:

Choose either Tennyson's "Ulysses" or Browning's "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister" and analyze the poem for the three basic elements of the dramatic monologue.

1. Who is the speaker? What do you find about him in the course of the poem? What does he reveal about him/her-self?

2. Who is the audience? What clues do you have about where the monologue takes place? How does the audience react to the speaker's monologue?

3. What is the moral of the poem? What is the reader supposed to get out of it? (You might approach answering this question by looking at what the speaker reveals about themself.)
