A Bildungsroman or "novel of education" is a work of literature with a protagonist that experiences moral, psychological, and/or mental growth. For this essay, you will have a chance to examine how elements of the Bildungsroman in Houskeeping help to communicate its overall theme(s).
Before beginning this essay, you will want to reread Marianne Hirsch's "Novel of Formation as Genre"https://vizedhtmlcontent.next.ecollege.com/CurrentCourse/Novelof Formation as Genre.pdf paying particular attention to how the Bildungsroman is defined on pages 296 - 299.
Your Task:
Write an argumentative, thesis driven essay that responds to the following prompt:
How do the elements of the Bildungsroman in Housekeeping help to communicate its overall theme?
Tips & Suggestions:
? You do not need to, nor should you, write about every single theme in the novel. You may address each element of the Bildungsroman, although this is not required.
For example, you could write an essay on how Ruth's quest for identity helps to communicate that transience is valued over permanence (or even vice versa depending on your interpretation). Or you could write about how society is represented as the antagonist and thus emphasizes the feminist themes of the novel. The choice is up to you, but feel free to run ideas by each other in the discussion boards and by me via email over the next few weeks.

A successful essay will:
· Be between 1200 - 1500 words in length and properly formatted using MLA guidelines.

· Include a clear and focused thesis that directly addresses the assignment
· Supports the thesis with specific textual evidence from the following sources:
o Robinson's Housekeeping
o Hirsch's "Novel of Formation as Genre"
· You may also incorporate evidence from other credible, and relevant secondary sources.
· Includes in-text citations and a Works Cited page properly formatted using MLA guidelines
· Is submitted to the Dropbox in Microsoft word format (.doc or .docx)
