Assignment:
The first step in this block-long process is identifying appropriate subjects for your investigation. As you think about something you would like to pursue, keep in mind that the focus must be on a subject related to global affairs. Also, you don't want it to be too broad, so focus on something specific, as your presentation time is limited. A study of government in Africa is far too broad, but you could look at a specific country and its governance.
For your first Milestone, propose two matters you would like to pursue. Once you have brainstormed your ideas, the instructor will examine your proposals and help you select one or refine an idea if needed. So we have a range of presentations for us to all learn from, only one person may present a specific subject, so your submission will give us some options for topics to explore.
Assignment Requirements:
In this assignment, you will brainstorm two potential topics you might address for your Final Project.
Here are the prompts you respond to (do this for each idea):
- Subject for investigation
- State your proposal as a research question or thesis statement (this forms the core of your research and guides your factfinding.)
- What interests you about this topic?
- Why is the subject important?
This does not have to be APA formatted because it's brainstorming.
To help you as you begin thinking about subjects that you are curious about, examine the SUNY Empire State College aid, "Developing a Research Question.
Examples of Subjects for Consideration
- "For my research project, I propose to consider the question of whether restored diplomatic relations with Cuba will introduce elements of capitalism in the economy, causing the island nation to move away from communism."
- "Right now, relations between the Philippines and the U.S. are strained, and I would like to consider the question: What will happen to U.S.-Philippines relations?"
- "Social media has empowered the masses, and I am particularly interested in how open access and online sharing are shaping civil unrest and wars. So to focus my research a little more, I will take up the question: How is social media altering the nature of war in the 21st century?"
- "Our text argued that the 'new population bomb' was one of four megatrends changing the world. I would like to dig into that subject a little more with the perspective of how shifting demographic trends are changing global relations. To focus my work, I will take up the question:
How 21st-century demographics are changing international relations?"
Example of Response to Assignment Prompts
- Cuban Relations with the United States
- Would restored diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States introduce elements of capitalism in the economy, causing the island nation to move away from communism?
- My family came from Cuba and I've always been interested in what's happening in the country.
- The U.S. and Cuba have had strained relationships for more than sixty years. Improved relations would be good for the U.S. and the Cuban people and help bring more prosperity and stability to the region.
