ELEE1170 Human and Machine Robotics - University of Greenwich

Learning Objective 1: Designing/Simulating/Building a real robot that can move freely along a vertical surface without any other support so fully self supported.
Learning Objective 2: Understand how input signals are translated into movement for the robot.
Learning Objective 3: The limitations/abilities of robots based on their implementation.

you will be required to:

• Study and identify which method you will use for your robot to be able to freely move along a vertical surface.
• Design/Simulate your robot.
• Decide which components to use, and how they will be used to drive your robot.
• Ensure integration between components/parts, while ensuring that your choices are future proof.
• Design an interface that allows for remotely controlling the robot's movement.

Different stages to the project:

• Decide on which movement mechanism you will use/design to be able to move along a vertical surface.
• Then go away and collect suitable information to ensure you understand the challenge, design requirements and are able to come up with solutions on how you will tackle this challenge.
• Please note that in contrast with the coursework through the year, this is an INDIVIDUAL project, so you need to do everything on your own - any plagiarism or sharing of information will be dealt with accordingly.
• Perform the design/simulation/development work, which you will need to demonstrate on in the days following from the report submission - these will be scheduled individually and a separate message will be provided to you for your meeting..
• Write and submit a report
• For mechanical bits, CAD drawings with all measurements on them should be created, CAD and PDF version should both be submitted as part of your work. All design work should be performed to such a level that it is ready for prototyping and assembly + you should also have simulated your mechanical design to demonstrate that it will work. .
• For electrical/electronic bits, please create a list of items needed and circuit diagrams all ready for manufacturing/assembly + simulate your design and provide the results to demonstrate that it works. Your electrical design could also require the design of some software code, depending on your chosen design route. All the design files also need to be submitted together with the report.
As for the implementation:

• Together with the submission of the report, please submit all your files (original file and PDF version for all of your mechanical and electrical design, software code, and simulations

The Report

• Try to not have only text, but possibly present something with a diagram, graph and/or table, to break the "pure text" as such. You may do this with regards to your introduction to give a bit of an overview, and then further on as well.
• Start your writing top-down. So, think about the structure first and what you need to present. Ensure that you cover all aspects of the design/simulation/construction in a consistent, logical order.
• Make full use of paragraphs to separate certain parts of your argument within sections/subsections.
Your report should follow a similar style to the following:

• Abstract: Try to "sell" your paper to convince the reader to read the full text. Start with a little intro/starter, then present the "main meal" and finish of with the most impressive dessert/results.
• Introduction: Situate your topic, why is it important and why should the reader bother to continue reading.
• Background: Provide background to what this is all about.
• Main work: Describe the work (design, simulation, building) that you have done, in detail.
• Results and Discussion: What are the main results, how did you get there and how relevant are these results in the larger context of this world around us.
• Conclusion: This mirrors your introduction, but it should really say what the main lessons are that you want the reader to take away. Note: This should not be a summary.
