Question
Shari is a recently hired Mercy Cross nurse who finds herself locked out of the Electronic Health Record systems one day because of too many failed password attempts. Per Mercy Cross IT's guidelines, Shari has a complex password that she occasionally forgets. As it's not convenient to contact IT (Shari works the night shift) and her shift is almost over, Shari asks Cher, a long-term Mercy Cross nurse, if she can use her password to access the system and document the chart of her patient, Mr. Robinson. Cher agrees to this. Shari accidentally documents incorrect information using Cher's password in Mr. Robinson's record.
1. What ethical and/or compliance issue(s) is associated with this scenario?
2. Do the nurses' actions conflict with the Mercy Cross code of conduct (see PDF)? If so, explain.
3. What are the potential ramifications for Mercy Cross Health? There may be several.
4. What consequences (if any) do you think Shari and Cher should face? Explain your answer and reference the levels of disciplinary action (verbal warning, written warning, formal disciplinary meeting, and termination). Should their consequences be different? Should their relative tenure factor into the decision? What else should?
5. What are your recommendations to.
