Question

Consider the various points Sam Harris makes about the illusion and conceptual confusion that many of us share regarding free will in our lives. In particular, think about the impact and importance of free will (or at least the belief in free will) for the functioning of our society as well as our own mental well-being. Taking that into account, consider the following possibility and what Sam Harris would say about it.

- In the year 2035 a new "electro-behavioral therapy" is developed to help people live better lives. It is a small electronic headband you wear while sleeping and it effectively changes your desires and beliefs. Most people see full results in just three nights of use with no need for further sessions. Popular options for therapy programs include things like Desire Healthy Foods and Crave Regular Exercise. Other popular options include I Am Beautiful, People Love Me, and Everything Will Be Fine. No one is forced or directly pressured to take the therapy, but it is made available and affordable.

Does this sound like something good? Or should we be concerned about this technology? Does it threaten our free will? Wasn't that an illusion anyway?
