In one study, the question concerned the effect of slight electrical shock on the learning of verbal materials. The participants learned a list of 15 nonsense syllables; 5 nonsense syllables were followed by shock each time they were presented while 10 were not. All participants had the same 5 syllables shocked. The list of nonsense syllables was presented until each subject satisfied a performance criterion that showed that they had adequately learned the list. In the analysis of the results, it was found that the syllables followed by shock were learned more rapidly than those that were not shocked.
