ELEC 20015 Digital Electronics - Middle East College
Learning Outcome 1: Differentiate the functions of the various logic gates using logic gate ICs and physical realization circuits.
Learning Outcome 2: Apply knowledge of Boolean expression simplification techniques to design cost-effective digital circuits.
Assignment Objective
Assignment will enable the student to get a basic understanding of logic gates, Boolean laws and digital circuit simplification techniques. This assessment will develop student's logical thinking and problem solving skills related to digital electronics.
Assignment Tasks
1) Task 1 - Submit a work proposal for this assignment on or before 05/11/2020 (23:59) which must include:
• Understanding of deliverables - a detail description of deliverables.
• General overview of proposed plan - initial understanding of solution to task2.
• Timeline for completion of the given tasks.
The work proposal must be submitted in a word file through the link available in Moodle.
2) Task 2

a. For the figure1, explain the status of switches S1 and S2 for which the LED will be tuned on? Also mention the condition for which the LED will turn on.

b. The input waveforms applied to a 3-input digital circuit are as indicated in Figure2. Show the output waveform in proper relation to the inputs with a timing diagram.
Write the output expression for the digital circuit.

c. Minimize the following logic function using K-map approach.

Q3.
a. Simplify the following Boolean expression using the properties of Boolean algebra. Show the steps clearly.

b. Convert the given expression into standard POS form. Also represent the standard form using shorthand notation.

Q4.
a. For the Boolean expression

i. Draw a logic circuit using basic gates only.
ii. Simulate the circuit using logic symbols and verify its truth table.
iii. Draw a logic circuit using NAND gates only. Show the conversion steps clearly.
iv. Which method is cost effective? Justify your answer.
b. Perform the simulation of physical construction of the logic circuit shown in figure 3. Verify the result observed with help of a truth table.
