Project - Project management of support model for the decommissioning of a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Nuclear facility
Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate the ability to frame, undertake and defend a significant project in an appropriate area of Engineering, with appropriate
technical level and depth, identifying and selecting source materials, techniques and theories appropriate to the task.
Learning Outcome 2: Gain considerable further experience of project management issues, including time management, planning and reviews.
Learning Outcome 3: Identify, implement, and assess solutions to particular technical problems and challenges, as defined by the project area.
Learning Outcome 4: Relate their own research findings and/or solution/design to existing solutions available in the literature.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate their ability to communicate their findings in an effective manner in a variety of forms, including summary reports, presentations, and a final report (dissertation).
Brief Description: The main aim of this project is to provide guidance on the management and organisation aspects for the decommissioning of a nuclear facility.
Objectives of the Project:
1. Study approach and bases on Decommissioning Planning management
2. To Develop a Support Modelbased on: alternatives, considerations, and previous experience, which includes
a. Regulatory considerations for decommissioning
b. Financing of decommissioning
c. Characteristics of the reference BWR power station
d. Suggested methodology for determining acceptable residual radioactive contamination levels for the decommissioned BWR
e. Decommissioning activities and manpower requirement
f. Decommissioning costs
g. Decommissioning safety
h. Considerations for decommissioning facilitation
Project Outcome:
- To Create or develop a support model for the entire decommissioning process based on the past studies, results and discussions carried, which will support for the future development.
- The protection of the public, workforce and environment is the most important factor of this overall decommissioning project.
- The recommendations developing from this study provide an opportunity to be used as a primary source of data collection for future research works that are foundational for the development of a cost-effective, safe and efficient support model for decommissioning BWR nuclear facility.
