Question

There are six rights for safe and efficient administration of medication. To start, we need to make sure we have the right drug. We can assure that we have the right drug by checking the providers' orders and seeing what the provider is requesting. Next, we can check the dose the provider is requesting and take note of that. We also need to check to see if we have the correct patient by checking at least 2 patient identifiers, such as name and date of birth. Next, we need to check the route the provider requests, such as intravenous, oral, intramuscular, etc. After that, checking the time that the provider requests is also key, such as if they are requesting it to be taken in the morning/evening. Finally, we need to assure that we document it correctly in the correct patient chart. As you can see, there are many factors in place at once and we must get them all correct. (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 2024). An example of this could be if we gave rocuronium to the wrong patient and paralyzed the wrong patient! That would be a whole case and someone would definitely end up going to jail.
