Scenario

Mike Ramirez called the program committee meeting to order-this time with a certain dread. He knew what Judy's topic was for this meeting, and although he was fairly comfortable with it, he could predict the screams of agony when the staff heard the words "number crunching." Judy smiled in sympathy when she saw Mike's discomfort. She was familiar with this reaction, having seen and dealt with it many, many times. For now, Judy could only reassure him that "number crunching" was in fact understandable to all those present and did not necessarily mean that they would be dealing with "real numbers." She explained that she would begin with a few definitions of essential terms -what is a statistic?-and then move on to simple examples of working with data. They would revisit a topic introduced at the last meeting about data sources, that is, nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio levels. Judy predicted that the group would be surprised that, unknowingly, they had been engaged in the first steps that prepared them for simple "number crunching." Now the committee needed to know exactly what to do with the data they were about to gather. Judy reminded Mike of other important reasons for learning to handle the data. Most significant was the improved odds that their grant application for funding would succeed if they made the commitment to "crunching the numbers." Indeed, the Beed Foundation would be looking for the interpretation that the data would yield: the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of the gardening program
