I have chosen to discuss the effects of substance abuse on adolescents. Because of the large increase of substance abuse over the past 5 years with what is going on in the world, I thought this would be a good topic to cover and learn more about. Some do not know much on this topic including parents and adolescent school teachers. I would like to know more about these topics for my PowerPoint presentation coming up and how as a society, we can start to decrease the amount of substance abuse in adolescents.

What treatment programs are out there for substance users who are adolescents? 

Is there a stigma that is put onto substance users as adults where adolescents are being missed?

Are there any treatment centers specifically for adolescents and the treatment of substance abuse? 

What type of teaching should be involved in schools and in health care to parents and adolescents about this topic? 

Specific Considerations

How can we reach out to adolescents to teach them about substance abuse? Can there be programs instilled through school or a healthcare system where adolescents can reach out if they have a poor family dynamic? How can parents be involved when they do not know much about the subject? This may not be a new subject for most, but sometimes unfamiliar to parents and some rural populations. Because of this, I believe it is important for everyone to be aware of the topic and what we could do as healthcare professionals to help decrease the substance abuse in adolescents.
