Importance of Healthy Sleep Hygiene
Sleep is the dynamic or regulated set of the behavioral or physiological state where many processes vital to our health and wellbeing occurs. Research indicates that, after puberty, People have a biological shift of their sleep routines.
The shift can deprive the teenager of two hours worth of sleep. Adolescent or People require 8.5 hours of sleep every night. Also, People tend to take upon irregular sleep patterns across the week. Part-time jobs and early morning classes affects their developmental state as Humans, (Warbeck, 2015). There different importance to healthy sleep hygiene for people to have optimal body functions.
Sleep hygiene affects our optimal functioning in many ways. Lack of good sleep hygiene for humans causes heightened stress or destructive environmental conditions. For example, Sleep deprivation leads, to the teenagers, to be late to school and makes them reluctant to get involved with extracurricular activities, (Fitzgerald, 2014). Drowsiness, crankiness, Skin problems like pimples and ACNE erupt due to the lack of enough sleep.
The use of caffeine or alcohol can worsen the problem of sleep. Pregnancy and menopause complication occurs due to the lack of enough sleep. Society members can experience chronic pain due to the lack of proper good sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene disruption can cause Alzheimer, cardiopulmonary diseases, and cancer. Use of computers and electronic gadgets cause sleep deprivation for many members of society. Lack of engagement in socializing, sports, and extra-curricular activities reduces the ability of the ease of functioning for people.
The development patterns of sleep are different as human's age. Infants or newborns have fifty percent of quiet and non-rapid eye movement as they sleep. The average time for the infants to sleep is 16 hours, (Fitzgerald, 2014). Also, children between the ages of one to five tend to sleep through the night and have naps during the day. 11 to 13 hours of sleep are what the children need.
Teenagers require nine hours of night sleep for the optimal health, cognitive functioning and emotional wellbeing. Teenagers are observed to obtain less sleep. On the other hand, adults need 7.5 to 8 hours of night sleep. An increased number of night awakenings or abuse of medication can affect their body functioning to a great extent.
In conclusion, sleep hygiene is crucial in the promotion of our optimal body functioning. Excessive daytime sleepiness, obesity, and continuous airway pressure are the different body problem that a person can encounter due to lack of enough sleep.
Anxiety, stress, hormonal changes, physical ailments and psychiatric illnesses are caused due to the lack of proper sleep hygiene. Behavioral modification programs or meditation can be used to ensure effective control of health problems. Prescribed drugs or sleeping aids can help reduce the sleep problems.
