Assignment:

By resisting the effects of his mental illness, Mark exemplifies resilience. He struggled with thoughts of suicide and feelings of being powerless throughout the entire book. Growing up, Mark believed he lacked resilience, but after reading the book from his point of view, Mark exhibited strong symptoms of it. Mark struggled for many years from depressed emotions and feelings, yet he displayed perseverance by conquering his darkest times. Mark developed resilience in the face of both himself and others after the realization that life is worthwhile. He made the decision to fight and discover himself, beginning his road to rehabilitation. Mark had to rely on himself as he was growing up because no one understood his illness or wanted to medication him, so he was forced to keep his emotions inside.

Without his decision to leave the bridge and pay attention to the stranger, Mark's resilience might have been overwhelmed, allowing his feelings to triumph. Because of his difficult upbringing, Mark has chosen to advocate for mental health while he recovers from his history. By sharing his story and letting people who are experiencing similar circumstances realise that they aren't alone and that life does turn around, Mark demonstrates resilience by assisting those around him.
