Implementation and effectiveness of sustainable intelligent transport systems
Description / Research: Analysis and assessment of case studies. This will require reviewing the available literature on sustainable intelligent transport systems (SITS) in general, criteria for their selection and assessment of their effectiveness in different conditions. This will be followed by detailed analysis and assessment of case studies related to the application of one or more types of SITS, depending on how many cases can be identified with sufficient data. Add citations and references properly
Topics for Research:
1. Smart buses and priority at signalised intersections
2. Traffic signal linking and monitoring via ( SCATS) Sydney co-ordinated adaptive traffic system
3. Freeway Ramp metering signal co- ordinated system controlling entry to managed motorways
4. Advanced Traveller Information System
Aim: To assess sustainability performance of intelligent transport system
Objectives:
• To review published studies on effectiveness of 6 ITS technologies in achieving their intended goals
• To use the findings from these studies in assessing how each of these technologies contribute to social, environmental and economic sustainability.
Structure of the Project:
• Table of contents
• Abstract
• Introduction (back ground to the research area and problem statement are included here; research aim & objectives, significance, methodology, scope, outline of the report could be integrated here or more commonly be included as separate sub-sections of introduction)
• Literature review (You review and analyse the literature for a purpose ; you should clarify that and draw and highlight clear conclusions from your review; Your literature review should directly address/ support your aim and objectives)
• Method or procedure (what you have actually done in achieving the aim and objectives of the research other than literature review ; any computer modelling, any data collected and processed, any experimental set up and program, etc.)
• Results and discussions
• Conclusions(and future recommendations)
• Acknowledgment
• References (consistent formatting is expected throughout the report)
Note:In this report, the effectiveness of four ITS applications will be reviewed in terms of achieving their intended benefits/goals, using published relevant studies. The information collected from these reviews will be used in assessing their contributions to three sustainability dimensions namely; environmental, economic and social. You need to see what improvements resulted from each in different parts of the world.
Your literature review should start with describing what each of these applications is, how it works and possible benefits from its implementation. Then, for each application, you write your findings from these past studies, separately. This will help you identify all possible advantages and disadvantages of each in different situations/conditions.
These findings will help you later in assessing how these applications contribute to sustainability; namely environmental, social and economic, e.g. reduced congestion will reduce emissions into the atmosphere from transport, reduce stress of road users and improve productivity by allowing heavy freight transport less travel time.
