A researcher evaluated the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral group-therapy approach in helping people to stop smoking. A pool of female smokers who had volunteered to give up smoking were randomly assigned to an experimental group, which received the group therapy, or a control group, which received no therapy. Six months after the experimental group had finished its therapy, members of both groups were interviewed by phone to ascertain the number of cigarettes smoked on the previous day.
