Respond to discussion:
“Effective persuasion involves two major elements: determining desirable objectives and outcomes and choosing the best methods to achieve those goals.” (Baack, 2012, section 5.4 para 2). When communicating with a boss, peer or subordinate the methods of persuasion would differ in each situation. I feel each group of people would possess its own challenges. Talking to a boss would be a more formal approach than with peers or subordinates. You need to have a clear plan in mind and valid reasons why this plan would be better. Preparation is key, if you are not prepared for all outcomes, the what, why, how, then the basis of your argument is not there. Something must be done to gain he attention of your audience, make them see why you feel your perspective is best. If they are not persuaded by you and your arguments about why you want a change made, then they are not likely to follow your lead. You must make the people you are talking to interested in what you are talking about and make them want the same things you want, give positive examples and make them feel this is the best overall decision. At my job we have a system we use that classifies all materials and product codes and their individual characteristics, we had a new program that was being rolled out and it was requiring some changes and new characteristics to be formed, which takes a lot of time. Our questions as a group were, how will these changes benefit our company? Why can’t we use some of the same characteristics that we already have? Most of the new characteristics were like what we already used. By pushing back and asking questions were able to cut down some of the workload on the new implementation. We recycled some of the same characteristics and it was less work and a better transition. This made for a successful rollout. The decision-making process would be the same no matter what group you would be appealing too. You would need to take the same steps. You need to identify what you are trying to change, plan and do what you need to try and get your plan in motion. Being persuasive is not about being right or wrong, I feel that it is about, can you appeal to the audience? Are you believable? Do you believe in your plan enough to make others follow?
