CASE STUDY:

This activity is important because as a manager, you must be able to creat.e an atmosphere that motivates employees to accomplish organizational goals. By understanding the use of motivational theories, managers can achieve results and allow employees to achieve their potential.

The goal of this exercise is to demonstrate your understanding of goal setting theory and organizational learning.

Read the case of a best place to work company and then match it to the goal setting theory and organizational learning characteristics.

Salesforce was ranked the #1 place to work in the U.S. in 2018 by Fortune Magazine. The young company, founded in 1999 and headquartered in San Francisco, employs over 17,000 employees in 56 U.S. locations. When asked to explain what they do, the company said, " We are the Customer Success Platform and world's #1 CRM [customer relationship management], empowering companies to connect with their customers in a whole new way. We work as a team to deliver success for our customers while giving back to our communities." The Fortune Magazine award is not the first for Salesforce. The company has made the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For 10 times in the past 10 years, along with 20 other best workplace lists since 2014.

What gives the company such a winning combination? The nomination for the 2018 Fortune award cites several characteristics that result in 94% of the employees saying their workplace is great. The list of programs is long and impressive. Key programs included equity advocacy, performance feedback, volunteer time off program, Ohana (Hawaiian word for family) workspace design, a transparent business plan, an employee learning tool called Trailhead, employee wellbeing benefits that include Wellness Reimbursement, Mindfulness Zones and a Parental Leave program and others.

Performance feedback for employees is a high priority, so much so that the company created a new Salesforce Feedback App in 2017 to "revolutionize our approach to feedback and performance." The app helps ensure employees receive real-time, genuine and regular feedback on their work. This feedback helps ensure the company recognizes employees' accomplishments and gives guidance for continuous improvement.

V2MOM is the name for the Salesforce business plan. The plan was designed by founder Marc Benioff with the goal of creating a "simple process to describe where we were going and how we would get there, so that everyone could participate and align, all the way down the management chain. He also wanted it to be a radically transparent process with everyone's goals and progress visible to the whole company to drive accountability." Every year the company holds a Dreamforce conference for customers, partners, journalist, the community at large and employees. A perk of employment at Salesforce is that all employees can attend (either in person or online) to learn about exciting company and member accomplishments and their impact on Salesforce customers' success.

Trailhead is the learning system that enables employees to continually develop their knowledge and skills for both current and future jobs. The learning system makes learning fun and covers a wide range of topics from products and services to the Ohana culture and how to adopt the company's management style. The system was initially developed for customers and has been adapted for employees. It rewards learning achievement with badges and over 350,000 badges were earned by employees in just the first half of 2017.

The list of benefits and perks goes on. For the complete review,
