Assignment 1 - What does it mean to be an effective manager in a diverse workplace?
Step 1: Identify what YOU consider is important in management work
• What tasks should managers be doing?
• How should they be doing these tasks?
• How should managers be engaging with a diverse workforce?
• What personal attributes should managers have in order to be effective?
• What skills do managers need to acknowledge ethical, cultural, social, and team issues?
Step 2: Consider if you agree with the following statements?
Read and make notes on the key points made in the article by Hartman and McCambridge (2011). Use headings to categorise your thoughts. Consider if you agree/disagree with the following statements by Hartman and McCambridge. Think about why you agree or disagree.
‘Stereotypical views of millennials characterize them as technologically sophisticated multi-taskers, capable of significant contributions to tomorrow's organisations, yet deficient in communication skills' (Hartman &McCambridge 2011, p. 22).
‘That human nature, that is to say, our human nature is much more created than it is discovered. We design human nature by designing the institutions within which people live and work' (Schwartz 2014).
Step 3: Read & Watch
• Read the article "Optimizing Millennials' Communication Styles" from the reading list.
• Watch ‘The way we think about work is broken' (Schwartz 2014) Ted Talk
After reading Hartman and watching Schwartz, write what you learned about how different generations (e.g. millennials and baby-boomers) have different or similar views about the 21st century workplace. You can use the following questions (and others) about what Hartman and Schwartz are saying to help structure your thoughts.
1. Do different generations communicate in different ways? If so, in what ways should managers communicate with different generations to make work satisfying?
2. Besides communication skills, how else can effective managers make work satisfying for their employees?
As you write your response, keep the main assignment question in mind: what does it mean to be an effective manager in a diverse workforce?
Now, you can begin finding academic articles on diversity in the workplace. The articles can help you define diversity and understand the implications it has for both staff and - critically - managers.
Step 4: Provide evidence to support your responses
So far you have written your thoughts about what you have read and viewed. You now need to find three (or more) journal articles from credible, peer-reviewed academic sources which provide evidence/support the main ideas you have determined from reading/viewing Hartman and Schwartz.
The articles must be current (between 2009-2019). Read the three articles, take notes or mark up the articles to identify the key points. Next, apply theory from those articles to support the answers you wrote to the above questions. Summarise insights and evaluate their relevance to modern workplace environments.

Step 5: Write your response
Compose your essay.
• Write an introduction (describe the purpose of the essay and the main points you will be covering);
• Compose 3-4 body paragraphs (minimum 100 words each); and,
• Write a conclusion (what is the 'take away' message).
• The document must be typed in MS Word using in an appropriate font, e.g. Times New Roman, Helvetica, Cambria or Arial (size 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing and left aligned).
Step 6: References
• Your reference list should include the Hartman and McCambridge article, the Schwartz (2014) TED Talk along with a minimum of three other credible sources:
• You must refer to a minimum of three other credible, peer-reviewed academic articles that have been published within the last 10 years (i.e., 2009 - 2019). That will enable you to undertake a synthesis and analysis of contemporary management work. Work with your tutor or a librarian if you are not sure how to locate academic sources and refer to the video on academic sources found on Canvas.
